The words the spies offered to Jesus sound, on the surface, like an excellent confession of faith. They complimented Him, saying that He spoke and taught rightly, did not show personal favoritism, and truly taught the way of God. Each of those words did not contradict the ministry of Jesus. But they did not speak in order to believe the truth; they approached in order to obtain a word by which to hand Jesus over to the authority of the governor. They spoke right words while hiding a wicked purpose. Luke records plainly that they approached having “pretended to be righteous” (Luke 20:20).
